LETTERS FROM ORWELLIAN CANADA, 2019 – 2022. FEAR OF FREEDOM

… He knew in advance what O’Brien would say. That the Party did not seek power for its own ends, but for the good of the majority. That it sought power because men in the mass were frail cowardly creatures who could not endure liberty or face the truth, and must be ruled over and systematically deceived by others who were stronger than themselves. That the choice for mankind lay between freedom and happiness, and that, for the great bulk of mankind, happiness was better…

George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Part III, Chapter 3

Letters from Orwellian Canada describe what happens when one chooses freedom instead of happiness because the happiness offered by Big Brother is illusory: it is based on the fear of the freedom to say something that may be considered politically incorrect, for example, that two plus two make four.

George Orwell wrote in this regard in his masterpiece Nineteen Eighty-Four“Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”

The letters to Canada’s Prime Minister demonstrate why this particular freedom is critical to all other freedoms.

The letter to the Washington-based Government Accountability Project (GAP), the Global Leader in Whistleblower Advocacy,

  • that developed a system to rate protections as a shield that offers a degree of safety to a whistleblower − from a cardboard shield to a metal shield,
  • that rated Canada as  the only country out of 60 examined by GAP that failed to meet any of the 20 criteria used to assess such protections,
  •  and that considers Canada’s whistleblower laws “a tissue paper shield”

describes why even this rating is generous for Canada where whistleblowers fight government wrongdoing and corruption stark-naked, with no protections at all, and are routinely crushed by the System.

The letter to the Chair of the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency tells the story of an operation carried out to punish those who insisted on the right to exercise this fundamental freedom.

The letter to the Members of the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament invites MPs to ask themselves and answer a very simply question: “What are Canadian values?”:

“…Looking back at what was done to her by the authorities I recall what Vladimir Bukovsky, a well-known Soviet dissident who told the world about punitive psychiatry practiced in the Soviet Union, said once about the USSR: “An unfortunate country where simple honesty is perceived, at best, as an act of heroism, and at worst – as mental illness.” Regretfully, now I can rightfully apply his words to Canada, too. You will understand why when you read the letter…”

The letter to a Member of the House of Commons of the Canadian Parliament describes how the fear of the freedom to do or say something that is considered politically incorrect gives rise to politically correct racial discrimination.

The Appeal to Parliamentarians of Canada and Russia shows why international human rights’ treaties have been reduced to voluntary codes of conduct and speaks about the need for measures to ensure that provisions of these treaties could be used by victims of human rights abuses in their home countries.

The letter to Canada’s Prime Minister describes one of the tools used by authorities to silence those who speak out against violations of their human rights by the state and seek justice for victims of human rights abuses. This tool is forced evictions.

The letter to Canadian author Margaret Atwood, one of the world’s  best-known English language writers whose dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale is widely considered to be a twentieth-century classic, explains how the novel helps those living in the Orwellian Canada.

TO MY FRIENDS AND FELLOW JOURNALISTS, WHEREVER YOU MAY BE is an invitation to pause and look back at our recent past, − an exercise that may help us better navigate the present.
